In the Old Testament, God spoke to his people through people named prophets. A prophet was someone God used to speak to others on his behalf.
One of these prophets was a guy named Isaiah. Isaiah spoke to the King of Judah, King Ahaz. Judah was about to be devastated by outside armies, so King Ahaz was going to to ask the nation of Assyria for help and protection.
However, instead of trusting in his military and politics to protect him, God asks Ahaz to trust him.
And this is the sign he was going to give Ahaz that he would protect and provide for him: “the virgin will conceive a child! She will give birth to a son and call him Immanuel (which means ‘God is with us’).”
Matthew reminds his readers of this truth.
Jesus is this promised child. Jesus is God with us.
God is not far. He is close.
Question: Have you ever felt that God is far away? How can you be reminded that God is close?

About this Plan
About this plan: Christmas is a big deal. It’s the day we celebrate the birth of Jesus. If we aren’t careful, Christmas becomes just another holiday, and we miss the significance of it. In this series, we look forward to Christmas by looking at the story of the Bible to remind us why Christmas matters.
