Brian’s self-assessment led him to an inescapable conclusion. He was a failure. In truth, there wasn’t much left in Brian’s life to salvage. He had a very superficial relationship with God. His priorities were shackled to his desires. His family life had been a deep disappointment. His meager accomplishments were about to be buried in bankruptcy. His attitude was lousy. Self-pity ruled the day, and I wondered how I could tell Brian that he needed to try love.

It all seemed too simple, but the evidence he offered made it clear that Brian had never really put biblical love (1 Corinthians 13:1-13) to the test. His life had centered on getting rather than giving. His self-portrait showed a man marked by impatience, abrasiveness, selfishness, arrogance, anger, malice, greed, and dishonesty; in short, the antithesis of love.
