There's Hope For Today

DAY 211 OF 366

Simon was probably more comfortable than the others. He was no stranger to the sudden squalls that angered the sea of Galilee.

Deepwater fishermen make an early peace with the sea, but imagine the terrors that gripped the tax collector, or the zealot, or the other landlubbers who followed Jesus’ command to take the boat to the other side. Simon knew boats through and through. You can be sure that he had inspected the planking, the sails, the oarlocks, and rudder. I would guess that Simon was firmly established at the rudder, shouting instruction and encouragement as the winds rose and waves began to break over the bow. Simon was in his element – his comfort zone.

Then Jesus came like some apparition, walking on the water. Here we find one of the great lessons on faith. God’s miraculous power is rarely revealed to us in our comfort zones. The one place Simon felt secure had to be abandoned so that new wonders could be experienced. Simon got out of the boat.

This morning I leave you with a Bible challenge. Search Scripture and see if you can find God revealing some new dimension of power or grace in someone’s comfort zone. Then get out of your boat!
