An Issue of Authority
Romans 6:11-12, 14
“In the same way, count yourselves dead to sin but alive to God in Christ Jesus. Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body so that you obey its evil desires…For sin shall not be your master, because you are not under law, but under grace.”
The issue of sin and temptation is an issue of authority.
To whose authority will we submit?
The self-made person declares, ‘no one’s authority!’ However, the decisions and thoughts are often controlled by pride, fear and a lust for things. We all serve somebody. When sin reigns, we develop strongholds in our thought life; repetitive thoughts that justify our actions and keep us living outside of God’s authority. Freedom from sin’s strongholds comes through recognizing their authority over us, and repenting to God for their authority over us and our submission to this sin, then resisting sin’s authority specifically (lust, fear, anger etc.), and finally being renewed in the truth of God’s forgiveness, grace and the power of the Holy Spirit. Jesus has decisively won the victory over sin and death.
Will we apply that victory to our battles with sin?
Lord Jesus, I humble myself before you and thank you for your freedom over sin and sin’s strongholds. You are my life-giver and I choose to live under your grace.
