Life-Giving Words
Proverbs 15:1, 4, 28; 16:1
“A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.
The tongue that brings healing is a tree of life, but a deceitful tongue crushes the spirit.
The heart of the righteous weighs its answers, but the mouth of the wicked gushes evil.
To man belong the plans of the heart, but from the Lord comes the reply of the tongue.”
Our words have the power of life or death. They can turn away wrath, bring healing and promote life. Our words can stir up anger, crush the spirit, gush evil and produce death. Those who grow in maturity weigh their answers; they speak carefully because they know the power that words have. God also knows the power of words. He gave us speech in his image. We communicate because God designed us that way, that we might give him glory. As we surrender our lives and our wills to God, he can direct even the replies of our tongues.
Lord Jesus, I yield my heart, mind, will and strength to you this day. Guide my words so they are healing, and give you glory.
