Counting
1 Chronicles 21:1-2, 8
“Satan rose up against Israel and incited David to take a census of Israel. So David said to Joab and the commanders of the troops, ‘Go and count the Israelites from Beersheba to Dan. Then report back to me so that I may know how many there are’…‘I have done a very foolish thing.’”
Why did David count the size of his army?
When he was on the run from Saul and hiding in the hills of Judah, did he count his fighting men?
When David faced Goliath and the Philistines, did he count the size of the army that was with him?
Why start counting now in the twilight of his leadership journey?
David gave in to pride. Pride succeeded where other enemies had not. He had taken his eyes off of the Lord and had placed them on his own strength. We cannot be ‘strong in the Lord’ and strong in ourselves at the same time.
Is our strength in our bank accounts, or insurance policies, or numbers of friends or companies?
What are we counting when we feel insecure or discouraged?
God invites us to count our blessings and live with humble gratitude for all he has done for us.
Lord Jesus, I repent for pride. I repent for counting and for taking my eyes off of you. I humble myself before you and I trust your provision this day.
