My Son!
2 Samuel 18:5, 33
“…‘Be gentle with the young man Absalom for my sake’…O my son Absalom! My son, my son Absalom! If only I had died instead of you – O Absalom my son, my son!’”
How could David deeply love a son who for years had been plotting against him, and then openly rebelling?
David’s love for his son was greater than his love for the kingdom or himself. In some ways David was blinded by this love. He ignored the faults and sins of Absalom because of his love for him.
Have we ever been the recipients of that kind of love?
While we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. While God does not overlook our sin, he sees us through the finished work of Christ on the cross on our behalf. It is only those who have been transformed by that sacrificial love, who have the capacity to love others deeply and sacrificially the same way.
Lord Jesus, thank you for your great love for me. Fill me with this love today, for your glory.
