Valuing God’s Spirit and Presence
Psalm 51:1, 10-13, 17
“Have mercy on me, O God…Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me. Do not cast me from your presence or take your Holy Spirit from me…grant me a willing spirit, to sustain me…The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart, O God you will not despise.”
David’s primary focus was the presence of God. Confronted with his sin, David was quick to repent. In repentance, his focus was the restoration of the Holy Spirit’s presence and fellowship in his life. Everything in David’s life changed when Samuel anointed him with oil and the Holy Spirit filled David’s life. The Holy Spirit inspired songs within him. His courage for battle came from a strength not his own. The discernment to lead men well, to devise strategy and to lead with humility all came from the anointing of the Holy Spirit in David’s life. Yet all that was at risk when through his rebellion he seduced Bathsheba and killed her husband. David longed for a steadfast and willing spirit, but he knew that would only come through the sacrifice of a broken spirit and a contrite heart.
How valuable is the fellowship of the Holy Spirit in our lives?
Do we know when he is grieved?
Will we do whatever it takes to experience the restoration of God’s presence and the Holy Spirit’s work in our lives?
Lord Jesus, your fellowship and the presence of your Spirit are life to me. Thank you for your mercy upon me this day.
