1 Samuel 27:1
“But David thought to himself, ‘One of these days I will be destroyed by the hand of Saul. The best thing I can do is to escape to the land of the Philistines. Then Saul will give up searching for me anywhere in Israel, and I will slip out of his hand.’”
David had entered Saul’s camp at night to prove his faithfulness to Saul. David lived with risk-taking obedience as he put his faith in God’s protection and deliverance.
Why this sudden lack of confidence?
Why make decisions based in fear?
Why find refuge in the camp of the enemy?
Why go to Goliath’s home city to find refuge?
After David’s victory over fear in his night visit to Saul’s camp, he let down his guard and became vulnerable to ‘what if’ lines of thinking.
What if he wasn’t home when a raiding party attacked his family?
What if Saul eventually found him unprotected?
What if God couldn’t be trusted?
We are most vulnerable after our greatest victories and battles. David’s security was in God, not in his location. David forgot or ignored that truth and tried to find refuge in enemy territory. When we look to entertainment, alcohol, pleasure or lust to ‘get a break’, we too have forgotten where our life and security are found.
Lord Jesus, I repent for believing there is refuge outside of your presence. I guard my thoughts and fix my eyes on you.
