Listening To The Word - 1 YearSample
All Share Alike
1 Samuel 30:22-24
“…all the evil men and trouble makers among David’s followers said, ‘Because they did not go out with us, we will not share with them the plunder we recovered’…David replied, ‘No my brothers, you must not do that with what the Lord has given us. He has protected us and handed over to us the forces that came against us…The share of the man who stayed with the supplies is to be the same as that of him who went down to the battle. All will share alike.’”
This life-giving principle of sharing the “plunder” among the team regardless of their role or level of prominence in the mission is still relevant for us today. Behind this principle is a recognition that God is our source, our protector and our provider, and by sharing what we receive we honor him in our midst. “Not equal gifts, but equal sacrifice” is another principle which calls all of God’s people to offer what they have to God’s service. It was God who promised victory to David if he pursued the Amalekites, not the four hundred who eventually finished the pursuit. While we do our part, it is not our gifts which determine the outcome of the mission or the battle, but God’s deliverance and grace. Humility looks to honor those who are weaker and less distinguished in our midst.
Lord Jesus, you are my Source. I pray for generosity and equity to mark my leadership decision-making.
