In one moment a still, small voice upended all my plans. “Will you go? Will you tell them about me?” Suddenly, I knew. I was made for this. I wanted to go tell people about Jesus! But where? Uncertainty made me anxious. The unknown was a scary place. 

I told God my plans. Where I’d go. Who I’d serve. “Anywhere but Asia. Anyone but Muslims.” I would answer God’s call, someplace safe, familiar, and comfortable. 

Graduating required completing a two-month missions internship. I applied everywhere. Guess where I interned? In Indonesia, a Muslim nation in Asia! 

Before going, I studied Islam. My heart broke. I wrestled with God. Is it really like this? Why treat women this way? Slowly I softened. Soon, I wanted to go. 

My first day in Indonesia was marked by exhaustion, language confusion, cultural blunders and witchcraft. I cried, a lot. This was not what I expected. Why was I here? The people felt too far from God. As I cried, I asked God for a bigger heart. 

For weeks, I fought God and made excuses. But each day, I found myself falling more in love with Indonesia. I loved ministry here. 

My last week, the missionaries asked me to return. “I’ll pray.” I answered. I’d been praying. I knew. I thought of when God asked, “Will you go? Will you tell them about me?” I surrendered all and said, “Yes, I’ll go.” 

Years later, I’m still in Indonesia. The unknown went from scary to a place of joy. I wake up each day looking forward to telling people about Jesus. What a privilege to serve in a nation far from him.

Don’t let the fear of the unknown keep you from answering the call to go and tell. You’ll find joy in the unknown. 

“Jesus said to them, ‘Do not be afraid. Go and tell my brothers to go to Galilee; there they will see me.”

Don’t be afraid. People wait to be told. Someone needs you to go and tell so that they might also see Jesus.
