Go: A 40-Day Journey To The Never Reached

DAY 8 OF 40

An Unlikely Candidate

In Vietnam I train pastors, church planters and evangelists. I preach outreach events, Bible school graduations and chapels, dedications, and conferences. You might guess I always felt God’s call to preach, but no.

Many teenagers in our church felt God’s call. Many, like my brother, displayed ministry talent. Practically born preaching, at age five, he preached to the empty yard, baptized my sister’s cat and one of our chickens. He had it; he knew it, others knew it, and he’s lived it.

Me? No prophetic words, no talent, nothing. Shy and taciturn I avoided the spotlight. At sixteen, things changed. I was baptized in the Holy Spirit and spoke in other tongues. I felt broken for the lost, a desire to preach.

Still, I told God, “I can’t preach. I’m not that type!” To compromise, I gave to missions. Preach? No thanks. I struggled for years. Finally, God spoke, “I’m not looking for a preacher; I’m looking for someone to surrender and tell the story.”

I shocked everyone when I announced I was called to preach. God calls preachers. Jesus commanded, go tell! He said, “This gospel WILL BE PREACHED in all nations.” Telling God’s story is not optional.

Great diversity marks those God calls; young people like Jeremiah and old men like Abraham, educated, like Luke, or unlearned, like Peter, timid men, like Timothy, and bold women, like Deborah, fiery, like John the Baptist, and stuttering introverts, like Moses. And then there’s me—the bashful, introverted, unlikely candidate God called to go, tell.

Perhaps you’ve felt the Holy Spirit calling you to go tell. Maybe, you feel unfit. Maybe others insist you’re not qualified. You don’t get a pass just because it’s not your comfort zone. God doesn’t seek talent, charisma, or finesse. He looks for surrendered hearts. He knows who he can use. Some four billion people have never heard a clear gospel presentation. Many eager to believe—if only someone would go and tell them. Will you go tell?

Go Tell!

Talk to a trusted spiritual friend or mentor if you battle surrendering to God’s call. Pray together, asking God to clarify his call and open your eyes to his plan for you.
