Go: A 40-Day Journey To The Never Reached

DAY 13 OF 40

Go in. See. Believe.

“The king is dead.” Thailand’s beloved King Bhumibol Adulyadej died on October 13, 2016. Thais mourned as children grieving the loss of a beloved father. Color was stripped from life, seas of people in black wept. Joy fled the Land of Smiles. I wept bitterly for the nation I love. My friends had lost their king, their hope.

Jesus was dead. The disciples felt the same when Christ was crucified. Confused and afraid, they hid. God’s redemptive plan for humanity remained hidden from them. Their hopes lay buried with Jesus.

Hearing of the empty tomb, John outran Peter. He reached the tomb, looked in, but hesitated to go in. Peter caught up and entered without hesitation. Then John went in.

When it comes to missions, each of us go in differently. Some, like John, lingering just outside. Uncertain of what awaits on the other side of obedience, we can’t bring ourselves to enter this place of death—death to self, safety, and comfort.

Nothing is accomplished lingering at the entrance to the empty tomb. Hesitation is understandable but don’t let it paralyze you. John hesitated, but ultimately he went in, saw and believed.

Some passionately jump into missions, arrive on the field and realize the cost is greater than they anticipated. Peter’s hesitation came when Jesus asked him, “Do you love me?” (John 21:15–17). Jesus used the word agape, or “unconditional love.” But Peter’s response, used the Greek word phileo, implying friendship.

How do you respond when Jesus asks you to go all in?

The revelation of the risen Lord brings the responsibility to go into all the world and preach the Good News. You are the answer to someone’s prayers. Don’t hesitate. Trade the temporary comforts of this world for Christ’s eternal glory. It’ll be worth it. Go in

Go In

Fold a piece of paper in half to create a balance sheet. On one half, list all of the things that are keeping you from fulfilling the Great Commission—weaknesses; obligations; fears; comforts, people, and stuff that you might have to give up. On the other, list the blessings of obedience. Be sure to include God’s presence, provision, and eternal glory. Which outweighs the other?

Pray
