The Book Of John In SongSample
John 14
When Jesus told his disciples, “My Father’s house has many rooms …I am going there to prepare a place for you” (John 14:2), he deliberately chose common, physical terms (house, rooms, place) to describe where he was going and what he was preparing for us. He wanted to give his disciples (and us) something tangible to look forward to—an actual place where they (and we) would go to be with him.
In Genesis 2:8, the phrase “planted a garden” shows God’s intimate interest in the creative details of mankind’s home in Eden. In the same way, Christ is paying attention to the details as he prepares for us an eternal home in Heaven. If he prepared Eden so carefully and lavishly in the six days of creation, what has he fashioned in the place he’s been preparing for us the last two thousand years?
As Heaven is the place we were made for, Jesus is the Person we were made for. Jesus didn’t say he was a way, truth, or life, but the Way, Truth, and Life; the only means to come to the Father. If we get it right about Jesus, we can afford to get some secondary things wrong. If we get it wrong about Jesus, in the end it won’t matter much what we got right.
PRAYER
Lord, thank you that you are the way, the truth, and the life, and that because of your unimaginable sacrifice, we can look forward to eternity with you and all who love you. Help us to want more than anything to be with you, Jesus. As a bride longs to live with her groom, stir in us a desire to live with you, in the place that you’ve promised you would prepare specially for us.
