The Book Of John In SongSample
John 19
Many were crucified in the time of Jesus, but only one cried with authority, “It is finished.” The phrase is just one word in the Greek, “tetelstai,” and better translated, “it is accomplished.” Jesus used the same word in his prayer to his Father in John 17:4, “I have brought you glory on earth by accomplishing (teleiosas) the work you gave me to do.”
In his life, death and resurrection, Jesus accomplishes what only he can accomplish as the only one fully man and fully God. He becomes the perfect sacrifice; the ultimate Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world. And he becomes the perfect high priest who gives us access to the throne room of God. In Christ’s death, we receive eternal life. In Christ’s death we escape the just wrath of God which he absorbs.
The death of Christ was not just a nice, loving act, but a profoundly necessary act:
For our sake God made Jesus to be sin who knew no sin,
so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.
2 Corinthians 5:21
But now you have been united with Christ Jesus. Once you were far away from God,
but now you have been brought near to him through the blood of Christ.
Ephesians 2:13
PRAYER
Father, we worship you and thank you for sending your one and only, perfect Son to die for our sin and make a way for us to live with you today and for all eternity. We love you. Thank you for salvation, forgiveness, and nearness to you.
