David flees from Saul while gathering a ragtag army of disaffected outcasts around him. During Saul’s continued pursuit, David, who refuses to strike the LORD’s anointed, spares the king's life twice. Ultimately, Saul dies ignominiously at the hands of the Philistines on Mount Gilboa. 2 Samuel picks up the narrative with David anointed king over the tribe of Judah and a growing civil war between the houses of David and Saul.
