God raised up the prophet Elijah to challenge King Ahab and Jezebel, who had led the northern kingdom into gross idolatry. Ahab’s death at the hands of the Syrians does little to change the spiritual climate. The book of 2 Kings continues the parallel histories of the two kingdoms and their downward descent to destruction. Elisha takes up the mantle of Elijah and performs a series of miracles that attest to his prophetic credentials.
