Celebrating Your Baptism

DAY 27 OF 30

Today, we will read 1 John 5, which tells us that there are three witnesses to Jesus being the Son of God: the water, blood, and spirit. In Jewish practice, multiple witnesses are required to confirm a matter. Two interesting thoughts come from this passage that prove that Jesus is the Son of God and that they have to do with blood and water. 1 – Christ’s Death When Jesus was crucified, only one disciple was present at His death: John. Everyone else was scattered, so they missed an essential part of Jesus’ crucifixion that fulfilled a prophecy in Psalm 34:18, “not one of his bones will be broken.” Crucifixion suffocated the victim as they were unable to get sufficient oxygen to their tissues. If they wanted to hurry up the process, they would hit their legs with a club and break them, thus eliminating their ability to push on their legs to get more oxygen. When Jesus died, He gave up His spirit early in the crucifixion process. Instead of hitting Jesus’ legs with a club, they pierced His side with a spear. Blood and water flowed out when they did, showing that He was already dead; His lungs were filled with water. 2 – Moments in the Life of Jesus The water represents His baptism, where Jesus came out of the water, the Holy Spirit descended on Him like a dove, and God the Father said, “This is my Son, and I am very pleased with Him.” The blood represents crucifixion, where God spoke through various actions – including a dark sky during the day and the temple curtain torn from top to bottom. Regardless of the vein you choose to follow for the witness of blood and water, they testify to Jesus being the Son of God. But what about the Spirit? The Spirit testifies to Jesus being the Son of God twice in His life, at His baptism (Mark 1) and the Mount of Transfiguration (Mark 9). This testimony of water, blood, and the Spirit is found in 1 John 5:11-12a, “God has given us eternal life, and this life is in His Son. Whoever has the Son has life.” This testimony can be shared with your friends and family. Tie it with what Jesus Christ has done in your life and your testimony, and you’ll have an incredible message for them to understand. Who can you share your testimony with this week?
