Showing Honor When Meeting Parents

DAY 2 OF 5

Show Grace

Ephesians 4:32

“Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.”

Colossians 3:12

“Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience.”

Being gracious is one of the best ways to show honor, kindness, and understanding when meeting your partner’s parents for the first time. While there might be some excitement surrounding the first meeting, there are likely some apprehensions, concerns, and nerves as well. You might be feeling this way, and so might your partner’s parents.

Because of this, it’s important to choose grace and forgiveness, letting go of the little things that might arise during your conversations.

For example, don’t read too much into a facial expression or an off-putting comment. Give your boyfriend or girlfriend’s parents the benefit of the doubt. They might feel awkward and uncomfortable, which can make for some awkward and uncomfortable situations.

Focus on having lighthearted conversations as opposed to interrogations. Rather than coming off as overly opinionated or combative, try to go with the flow. The first meeting is truly about showing your respectful character, and you can do that by choosing grace and understanding above all else to ensure the parents feel comfortable and respected.

Parents can be difficult, especially if your partner has a challenging relationship with theirs. Keep all of this in mind during the first meeting, and choose to be gracious and forgiving, kind and compassionate. By doing so, you can create an atmosphere of mutual respect and appreciation and start the relationship with your partner’s parents off on the right foot.

A Prayer for Grace

God,

You are the perfect giver of grace. Your grace knows no bounds. Help me learn how to be gracious, forgiving, and understanding like you. As I meet my partner’s parents for the first time, I ask for a calm spirit and lighthearted mindset. Please help me act and speak in a way that makes their parents more comfortable and respectfully navigate questions and conversations.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.
