Through the Bible: Jeremiah

DAY 5 OF 19

Unwelcome Messages

Do not be arrogant…give glory to the Lord your God before he brings darkness, before your feet stumble on the darkening hills. You hope for light, but he will turn it to utter darkness. …If you do not listen, I will weep in secret because of your pride.
Jeremiah 13:15-17 (NIV)

When we go hiking, we are always mindful of impending nightfall. We heed the warnings of our leader, fearful that darkness will prevent us from finding our way home.

Jeremiah was a faithful and obedient prophet, and delivered God’s warnings over four decades, calling on Israel to turn back to God. He was tenacious, facing unrelenting opposition and harsh criticism. Jeremiah could be faithful to his unwanted calling because God promised to be faithful to him.

Who is the 'Jeremiah' in our lives today? How is God calling us to obedience? Do we focus on God’s grace and mercy? When warned of our arrogance, disobedience, or immorality, are we humble and repentant or prideful and obstinate?

Prayer

Father God, help me to heed the unwelcome messages You have for me and follow You wholeheartedly. May I be humble and repentant, even though I feel uncomfortable, fearful or believe the message must be for someone else? Thanks for always being a merciful God, who brings me hope. Help me to focus on Your character, our just and righteous God, and to trust that You, in Your infinite wisdom and perfect plan, will bring about what is best for me. In Jesus' name I pray, Amen.

About this Plan

Through the Bible: Jeremiah

Jeremiah, the author of this book, was born in approximately 650 BC. He was called by God to prophesy to the southern kingdom of Judah of the imminent judgement due to their disobedience to God. Often mocked and beaten for his prophecies, Jeremiah remained faithful to his calling. Though Judah was given forty years to repent, the people continued in sin and were eventually exiled to Babylon in 586 BC.
