HUMBLE ME

The essence of humility is that we do not think of ourselves at all. Truly humble people probably don't spend a lot of time thinking about it or even realize they are humble; they just live their lives. So, how can we grow in our humility? Well, according to the Bible, to become humbler (that is a word) we should:

  • Recognize God's power: We should actively recognize our dependence on God. Humility is acknowledging that all good things come from God and that we are not self-sufficient.
  • Serve others: We should prioritize the needs of others above our own. Putting the needs of others before our own is a key aspect of humility.
  • Accept criticism: We should be open to feedback and willing to learn from others, even when it is corrective.
  • Avoid pride: We should resist the temptation to boast or seek recognition for our achievements and not think more highly of ourselves than we ought to.

In his book The Purpose Driven Life, Rick Warren wrote, "Humility is not thinking less of yourself; it's thinking of yourself less." Fasting is a way to practice humility by helping us focus on God instead of ourselves. Fasting is a means of developing a selfless attitude, taking the focus off us and placing it on God. By showing how weak we are, fasting can help us to develop a more humble attitude. Fasting is a way of practicing humility by valuing something more than ourselves. Not everyone who fasts is humble, but humble people fast.

So today, you can pray with me, “God, show me the places in my life where I need to be more humble. Help me to recognize your power, prioritize the needs of others above mine, accept criticism, and avoid pride. Help me become more like Jesus every day. Lord, help me cultivate a humble heart.”

Dangerous Prayers

In His most familiar prayer, Jesus uttered a four-word "dangerous prayer:" "Your will be done" (Matthew 6:10). It takes trust in God's goodness and faithfulness to pray for His will in our lives. I want to invite you to have the same heart and desire as Jesus and to follow His lead in these four words: "Your will be done."
