Faith offers assurance

“Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.” (Hebrews 11:1)

Faith, by definition, has some element of uncertainty in it. You believe in something you cannot see or touch. That requires trust. If we believe the Gospel, we must trust that the Lord God is as He says in the Bible, and that He will fulfill His promises. We have limited “evidence” for this. Our five senses hardly help us when it comes to things “hoped for” and “not seen.”

Yet in Hebrews 11 we read about faith as “the assurance of things hoped for” and “the conviction of things not seen.” This is because our faith is anchored in the promises of God. Those are rock solid! In Isaiah 54:10 this is beautifully expressed:

“For the mountains may depart
and the hills be removed,
but My steadfast love shall not depart from you,
and My covenant of peace shall not be removed,”
says the Lord, who has compassion on you.”

So faith does not have to be doubtful. God's words are even more reliable than our own senses and the world around us. For this world will eventually disappear, but the Kingdom of God we hope for will last forever.

What is most “certain” to you? Why did you choose this particular answer?
