What Makes a Good Person?

DAY 3 OF 12

A lifelong process

Train yourself for godliness; for while bodily training is of some value, godliness is of value in every way, as it holds promise for the present life and also for the life to come” (1 Timothy 4:7-8).

Changing thought patterns takes time. So does overcoming established habits, especially if there is resistance to these changes from those around you or from within your own heart. Likewise, if you want to take God's directions for your life seriously and be like Him in everything, this does not happen overnight. Sometimes it is difficult and you are in danger of giving up. That's why Paul encourages Timothy:

  • “Train yourself.” (1 Timothy 4:7)
  • “Practice these things, immerse yourself in them, so that all may see your progress.” (verse 15)
  • “Persist in this.” (verse 16)

You, too, may take these encouragements to heart. Keep going. Then, in time, you will begin to see changes. Other people will then notice your progress as well.

If we consciously choose what is good, our character will be refined, and in time, it will become easier for us to live righteously, purely, and honorably. Thus, we may develop character traits that reflect God.

However, this advice is not a self-help book, as if we should do this job on our own and thus become a good person. Every day, we may ask for God's guidance and strength to make the right choices and grow in living according to His will.

If you are losing heart, read through Paul's good advice one more time. Do not give up!

About this Plan

What Makes a Good Person?

Every person has certain character traits that he or she is born with. That makes us all unique. However, we can also consciously choose to develop certain virtues. These help us to live according to God's will and contribute to the well-being of others. The Bible gives us some valuable guidance in this regard.
