What Makes a Good Person?

DAY 1 OF 12

Find direction in life

Whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things" (Philippians 4:8).

Every person is unique, with their own personality and character (or traits). In addition, we are shaped by our upbringing and social environment. Experiences we have had in our lives also influence what we consider important and valuable. This creates a wide variety of norms and values.

For all the differences that may exist, the Bible provides us with points of orientation that give direction for each person. In Philippians 4:8, we are urged to “think about” certain things and be guided by them. If we set our minds on these things, our choices will be consistent with them. Then, in our own specific context, for which there are often no concrete directions to be found in the Bible, we can still confidently make choices that are consistent with God's will.

What the Bible indicates does not always align with the culture around us. Nor does it always match our own desires. Living honorably and justly is often difficult. That makes it important to be reminded regularly of God's guidelines for our lives.

Read Philippians 4:8 again carefully and compare your own life to this list. Which elements are reflected in your life, and which perhaps are not? What do you need or want to change?

Day 2

About this Plan

What Makes a Good Person?

Every person has certain character traits that he or she is born with. That makes us all unique. However, we can also consciously choose to develop certain virtues. These help us to live according to God's will and contribute to the well-being of others. The Bible gives us some valuable guidance in this regard.
