Overcome the Mind Ambush - 5 Steps to Find Peace in the Noise

DAY 1 OF 5

Start Your Day at Night

Have you ever felt so overwhelmed by the noise within that your shoulders ache, your teeth clench, your head hurts, and even your ears are sensitive to sound? I understand, truly I do. This was what it was like for me.

Here I was, a divorced mum, living life with my four treasured young children, feeling ambushed by the noise in my head, and yet, in my heart I was deeply devoted to the Lord having given Him a full, surrendered yes to the adventure that was set before me.

It didn’t make sense at the time why this was happening to me. “Lord, where are you?” “Lord, I can’t hear you.” “Lord, what’s going on?” I was struggling to see what it was that Father God was doing in my life because all I could hear was noise and all I wanted to experience was Him.

It was in the process of looking for an answer that this one step started a movement within me that unlocked the peace that I was desperate for. Evenings had been a time of pressure with the ebbs and flow of anxiety, loneliness, fear for the future, and uncertainty. That flow filled my nighttime space creating an unsettling in my heart, often causing me to toss and turn through the night, waking to unwanted anxious thoughts.

One day, I heard a pastor sharing that traditionally in the Hebrew culture, it is understood that the beginning of a new day starts at sunset the night before. I wondered, “Perhaps this is why the Lord encouraged Joshua to meditate on the Book of the Law, day and night.” As I held this thought with the Lord, I began to discover that when we take the time to establish an evening routine that cherishes the presence of peace, we then start our day (and our night) with peace in mind.

Friend, it was as simple as changing my routine. Where I would have watched the news, I made time for praise and worship. Where I would have gotten caught up in a friend’s drama, I chose to invest time in my relationship with Jesus and journal instead.

There are lots of little yet powerful changes you can make to your evening routine that will allow you to tangibly host the presence of peace that shifts you out of the noise as you move into a new day with Him.
