Living in God's PresenceSýnishorn
God is everywhere. And that’s good!
“Where shall I go from your Spirit?
Or where shall I flee from your presence?” (Psalm 139:7)
David is aware of God's presence. He cannot escape God. Even if he ascended to heaven or laid himself down in the place of death; even if he went to the end of the world, God is everywhere. Sometimes this can seem oppressive when you want to keep something hidden from the Lord. Sometimes you would just prefer to hide in a corner because you know you are doing wrong and don’t want God to see you. But you can’t escape God’s presence—fortunately.
In another psalm, David describes how he tried to keep quiet about his sin, but it didn’t work. He felt God’s hand pressing down on him day and night, and he was suffering. Finally, he gave up and confessed his guilt. “And you forgave the iniquity of my sin”. he writes in wonder. “You surround me with shouts of deliverance.” God does not want us to walk away from Him, because only in His presence can true life be found.
If we could hide from God, we would probably not take the step to return to Him. But only if we confess our sins to Him do we find lasting joy. It is good to be in His presence!
