DAY 11: OVERCOMING THE ODDS

Key verses: All these kings came out to fight. Their combined armies formed a vast horde. And with all their horses and chariots, they covered the landscape like the sand on the seashore. - Joshua 11:4

So Joshua conquered the entire region… - Joshua 11:16

Joshua 11 paints a daunting picture: an alliance of kings joining forces, creating a massive army with “as many people as the sand on the seashore” (Joshua 11:4). For Israel, the task could have felt overwhelming, even impossible. They were outnumbered and outmatched. Yet, it was in the face of this overwhelming opposition that God brought about a series of victories, allowing Joshua to conquer the entire land.

God’s commission to His people was clear, and they didn’t retreat or question the odds. The enemy’s size wasn’t a deterrent; rather, it became the very stage for God to demonstrate His power. As Joshua and his troops moved forward, God gave them victory after victory. Twice, the passage notes that “Joshua took the entire land.”

It’s a reminder that the scope of the mission doesn’t limit God’s power but instead showcases His capacity to bring His people through insurmountable challenges. You might feel that fulfilling objectives for your work life, church ministry or family are similarly daunting. It can seem impossible to fulfil what God has set before us. As a church, our commission is no small feat either —to bring the message of Jesus to millions in Singapore. And to billions in the nations of the world.

However, our call isn’t limited by numbers or odds; God equips us for every part of His mission. So, when faced with the vastness of this mission, remember that nothing is too hard for the One who goes before us.

Response

What overwhelming situations in your personal life or ministry can you bring before God, trusting that He has already equipped you for victory?

As part of our church’s mission to reach our nation, what steps of faith can you take to fulfil God’s commission, even when the task seems overwhelming?
