Abba: Father

Though the Old Testament reveals many rich names of God, the New Testament reveals Him most fully because of Jesus.

Abba is an Aramaic word which means Dear Father. It is the familiar name small children use for their father- Daddy.

John 10:15 As the Father knows Me, even so I know the Father.

Pious Jews would never dare to address God as Abba. For the Jews, God can be Father to the nation of Israel, but not Father to individuals. Jesus shocked the religious leaders of His day, when He kept referring to God as Father, whose name they even feared to pronounce.

In John’s gospel, He calls God His Father 156 times.

Matt 6:9 In this manner therefore pray, Our Father in heaven, hallowed be Your name.

Jesus taught His disciples to pray addressing God as Father.The secret of effective prayer is to realise that you are calling out to your Daddy. Jesus Himself prayed, calling God- Abba Father. Abba expresses all the love and affection that a small child has for his dad.

John 20:17 ..,I am ascending to My Father and your Father, and to My God and your God..

After His death, burial and resurrection, Jesus declares that God is our Father too. Jesus took the punishment for our sins; the great dividing wall between us and God is broken down and now God is not just God, but He is Father to us! All those who receive Jesus Christ are born again- born of God.

Almighty God is Daddy for us! The great God of the universe invites you and me to call Him, Daddy!

Rom 8:15 For you did not receive the spirit of bondage again to fear, but You have received the Spirit of adoption by whom we cry out, “Abba Father”.

♥Response: Thank You, Lord, You are my Abba, my Daddy because of Jesus. I don’t take this privilege lightly but humble myself as a little child before You. May my prayer life change. In Jesus’ name.

I have received Jesus and believe in His name and therefore I have been given the right to become a child of God. John 1:12

I am not born again of blood, or of the will of the flesh, or of the will of man. I am born of God. John 1:13

I am a child of God and God has sent the Spirit of His Son into my heart, and I cry out, “Abba, Father!” Gal 4:6

The Holy Spirit, Himself, bears witness with my spirit that I am a child of God. Rom 8:16

I love my enemies, I bless those who curse me, I do good to those who hate me and I pray for those who persecute me so that I may be like my Father in heaven. Matt 5:44-45

Let’s pray:

Pray for India for protection from all terrorist activities. Pray that their terror strategies will be exposed.

Pray for protection from natural disasters especially floods, drought, earthquakes and tsunamis

Pray for all the Armed Forces: The Army, the Navy and the Air Force
