DAY 25 OF 50

Highest and Best Use

All things are legitimate [permissible—and we are free to do anything we please], but not all things are helpful (expedient, profitable, and wholesome). All things are legitimate, but not all things are constructive [to character] and edifying [to spiritual life]. 1 Corinthians 10:23 AMPC

The principle of 'the highest and best use' is one used in real estate to make the argument that real estate assets should be deployed to uses that provide the highest and best utility. In other words, the value of real estate assets should be maximized in the use to which it is put.

The pursuit of the highest and best use is the kernel of what is expressed in the verse above. Yes, there are many legitimate and permissible things we can do with the time, skills and resources at our disposal, but our calling is not to the permissible, it is “the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.”

Of course, the highest and best use in our case does not always equate the most financially rewarding use as might be assumed in real estate. Instead, it is the use that leads most assuredly to the purpose of the business, and the forming of Christ in the business leader. It is that use which is “constructive to character and edifying to spiritual life."

This principle provides critical fail-safe guidance especially when the believer is in a sector that can be considered primarily neutral yet very prone to degeneration into evil, e.g., media. If you own a blogging business, for instance, constantly focusing on what is the highest and best use will provide the much-needed counterbalance to the pressure to cave in and just publish the audience's basest cravings.

There is, of course, the concern about whether you will be able to make a financial success of 'good'. Well, while your primary responsibility is to be concerned about your spiritual success, it is nevertheless important to bear in mind that, “It is vain for you to rise up early, to take rest late, to eat the bread of [anxious] toil—for He gives [blessings] to His beloved in sleep.” (Psalm 127:2 AMPC)
