Making Sense of it All
For the Christian business leader, every day starts with the confrontation, “choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, ...” (Joshua 24:15 AMPC)
The choice, of course, is between God and money (Matthew 6:24). Every morning when you wake up, you consciously or unconsciously make the decision to either go out there and serve the Lord in your business or go out and serve money. And, believe it or not, money is a real god.
It was C.S. Lewis who said that if you aim for heaven, you will get earth thrown into the bargain. That should be the choice of the believer. You should wake up every morning with heaven on your mind, and you will find as the Lord promised that “all these things shall be added unto you.” (Matthew 6:33)
The obvious question then is, how does one go out every day and seek first the Kingdom and His righteousness without losing focus?
Here are a few pointers you should use now, and come back to from time to time for course correction.
- If you were in the shoes of that young man who Jesus asked to give up all his wealth and come follow Him, how do you think you might react? (Matthew 19:16-22)
- If you believe 100% that the Lord would meet your needs irrespective of what vocation you choose to give your time and energy to, would you still be running your current business?
- If your answer is “No”, what are you going to do about it?
Write down any anchor Scriptures that the Lord leads you to for future reference.
One more word
These past seven weeks, you should have slowly but surely come to realize that however you may describe your day job, it is actually to be viewed as a ministry. The ultimate aim of your ministry is to represent and present Jesus to the world by your own conduct first and in all your endeavors.
God's agenda is to infiltrate every sector of human endeavor with the gospel of Jesus. He does this by sending His children into these spheres as ambassadors who shine forth as the light, and live as the salt of the earth.
If you have done the exercises at the end of each week, you should, by now, have received a lot of insight and instructions from God on how to align your business with His vision for your life. The weeks and years ahead will test your resolve to walk in this new light but even if you have doubts like Gideon, God still says to you “Go in this thy might.”
As you go on, you must check regularly to see that Christ is being formed in you. This is the ultimate proof that you are on the right path. If there is an increase of His grace in your life, everything else will work out as God purposes for them to work out.
God speed.
