Abolitionist Efforts and A Call to Action: The Body of Christ

The most common question people ask after learning about sex trafficking is, “What can I do to make a difference?” The statistics can be so overwhelming. It’s easy to believe the lie that your small contribution won’t make a difference. But you possess unique God-given talents and spiritual gifts that can be used to create a powerful, lasting impact. Not everyone is able to raid brothels and rescue victims. Not everyone is able to personally counsel survivors as they embark on a journey toward healing. But everyone can do something.

One 8-year-old girl from California decided to use her lemonade stand to raise money to stop child slavery. She asked her customers to simply give whatever was in their heart. She raised over $100,000. Her small lemonade idea has since evolved into a corporation. Make a Stand Lemon-Aid sells fair-trade, organic lemonade at 137 stores. She is expected to gross $2 million this year alone, all for the sake of freedom. God can use small, simple things to do great and mighty things! Whatever your contribution, your gifts are invaluable to the body of Christ.

Discussion Questions for Reflection and Application

1. Take a moment to think about your personal gifts.
2. Intercession is a gift you are already using on behalf of the oppressed. What additional spiritual gifts, talents, or even hobbies, do you possess that you would like God to use for justice and freedom in the world?
3. How has today’s devotional affected your view on the power of simple beginnings?

A Prayer for Action

“Don’t do nothing because you can’t to do everything. Do something. Anything.” –Colleen Patrick-Goudreau

Dear God,

I thank you that I am your handiwork, created to do good works, which you prepared in advance for me to do. (Eph. 2:10) I desire to submit to your call of action on my life, not because of the false notion that works save me, but because of your great love, which compels me. (Eph. 2:8-9; 2 Cor. 5:14) I pray that you would reveal to me what I should do to defend the cause of the oppressed. (Isa. 1:17) I do not want to lean on my own understanding. I acknowledge you right now so that you will make my path straight and guide me into your will. (Prov. 3:5-6) If I am to give financially, show me how much. If I am to serve with my hands, show me the task. If I am to use my voice in a specific way, reveal to me the words and the platform.

As I humble myself before you in this request, I pray that I would become less so that you would become more. (John 3:30) Let my motive not be to receive glory, but to bring you glory as I respond to your call. (1 Chron. 16:29; Rev. 15:4) In Jesus’ name, amen.
