Unvarnished Jesus: A Lenten JourneyMuestra

Luke 23:44–46
13th Station of the Cross: Jesus dies
Jesus uttered the Cry of Dereliction — “My God, My God, why have you forsaken me?” — not because there was a rupture in the Trinity and the Son had actually been forsaken by the Father, but because this was his very real human experience in the midst of horrible suffering. Psalm 22 opens with, “My God, My God, why have you forsaken me?,” but in the end the psalmist says, “My soul shall live for him.” In His suffering Jesus uttered the bewildered Cry of Dereliction, but in His death Jesus commits His spirit into the hands of the Father He knows will never forsake Him. Sometimes when we’ve done all we can, there’s nothing more to be done than to put everything in the hands of the God who will never abandon us.
