Humility and the Presence of God
Luke 16:25
“…‘Son, remember that in your lifetime you received your good things, while Lazarus received bad things, but now he is comforted here and you are in agony.’”
Psalm 138:6
“…the Lord looks…upon the lowly (humble), but the proud he knows from afar.”
Humility is a requirement for a relationship with God. It can be easier for the poor to recognize their need of God than it is for the wealthy who are self-sufficient. This perspective of eternity gives wisdom and is a reminder that pride and independence will cost us forever, while humility will pay dividends both in this life and the life to come. Lazarus was comforted after death, but was denied comfort in this life. Had the rich man humbled himself and given comfort to Lazarus while he still lived, he might have recognized that he too needed God in his life. We need the poor more than they need us.
Jesus, I humble myself before you. Allow me to see my true condition before you.
