Covenant Keeper
Jeremiah 31:31, 33
“’The time is coming,’ declares the Lord, ‘when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah . . . I will put my law in their minds and write it on their hearts. I will be their God, and they will be my people.’”
Jeremiah 31:35-36
“This is what the Lord says, he who appoints the sun to shine by day, who decrees the moon and stars to shine by night . . . . ‘Only if these decrees vanish from my sight,’ declares the Lord, ‘will the descendants of Israel ever cease to be a nation before me.’”
The new covenant that we have received in Jesus Christ is sealed by the Holy Spirit so God’s words and law are brought back to mind as the Spirit counsels us. However, God makes it really clear that this will never replace His first covenant with Israel. Israel will be a nation before God as long as the sun and moon continue to shine. Why did He place these two prophetic statements next to each other? Probably because He knew the beneficiaries of the new covenant would persecute the descendants of Israel and attempt to remove them from receiving the benefits of their chosen status with God. The ingathering of Jews to Israel after thousands of years is a reminder that God’s covenant purposes stand.
Lord Jesus, thank you that you are a covenant keeper, not breaker, both in my life and in Israel.
