ON TOP: YOUR GUIDE TO HOLISTIC SEXUALITYSample
Relearning the Purpose of Sex
Do you remember the game telephone or Chinese whispers? In this game, you sit in a large circle with a group of people. One person creates a message and whispers it to the next person. This person then passes it on to the next, until it reaches the last person. Finally, the last person loudly explains the message they've been told. It’s quite humorous how the message can change from the original message, as everyone takes creative license to reinterpret and put their spin on it.
This is what has happened with the message of sex. Everyone’s passing on messages, thoughts, and opinions on the topic, but has anyone stopped to ask, “What was the original idea of sex — what did it start as?”
In our world today, I’ve found there to be two main viewpoints on sex. It seems like we are told:
1. Don’t you dare! It’s wrong unless it’s in marriage. You’re a sinner.
2. Here is a condom. Go for it! You are young, wild and free.
And I think we need a middle.
We need to honor and value the word of God. We need to ask questions and learn from the Creator's plan. But, we also need to be comfortable with the conversation, and encourage this aspect of our life in a healthy way.
We can’t be silent or pretend like one of the most important issues of our teenage lives doesn’t exist. Through scripture, we are shown a sex-positive worldview. The Christian worldview shows us that sex: Creates new life, delights, and unifies — all positive messages and intentions for us to hold on to.
Reflect:
- What are the messages you have received from your parents, friends, and the media about sex?
- Do you agree?
