“This message of encouragement” - so the writer describes the whole of this magnificent epistle. When we remember its main themes we recognize this as a true description - the supreme glory of Our Lord Jesus Christ in his person and work; the High Priesthood of the Son of God; the life of faith which overcomes; the warning note.

How often the best encouragement is an exhortation to live the normal Christian life. The final chapter contains some very practical exhortations. They concern love, liberty and especially loyalty.

• Love for the brethren which overflows to others in need - “Keep on loving each other as brothers” (verse 1).
• Loyalty to the standards of Christian marriage - “Marriage should be honoured by all, and the marriage bed kept pure” (verse 4).
• Liberty from the love of money - “Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have, because God has said, “Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you’” (verses 5-6).
• Loyalty to the leaders whom the Lord gives us “Remember your leaders, who spoke the word of God to you” (verses 7-8, 17-18).
• Loyalty to the truth - “Do not be carried away by all kinds of strange teachings” (verse 9).
• Loyalty to the Lord Jesus, whatever the cost - “Let us . . . go to him outside the camp, bearing the disgrace he bore” (verses 10-16).
