The question raised here has relevance for all Christians, as it brings the subject of wisdom to the fore. Many feel that James has particularly in mind those “who teach,” to whom he has referred earlier (verse 1). Certainly, if all need wisdom, those called to teach need it in fuller measure.
Wisdom has been defined as God-given, spiritual insight. It is not “the wisdom of this age” (1 Cor. 2:6). It begins with “the fear of the Lord” and, as John Blanchard reminds us, “Nowhere in the Bible is wisdom attributed to the unbeliever.” The person who possesses it will show it “by his good life.” A man may have “understanding” (which R. V. G. Tasker tells us means “expert or professional knowledge”) and yet “harbour bitter envy and selfish ambition” in his heart, which will be reflected in the life he lives. He may well be proud and arrogant. But the good life of the wise will be marked with humility - with the “meekness of wisdom” and meekness, we know, is not weakness. “I am meek,” said the One “who has become for us wisdom from God” (Matt. 11:29, Av; 1 Cor. 1:30).
This wisdom “comes from heaven” and “is first of all pure, then peace-loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial and sincere” (Jas. 3:17). And, says James, it is there for the asking (Jas. 1:5-7).
