“Heirs with you of the gracious gift of life” - or, as the Authorized Version puts it, “heirs together of the grace of life.” This is a sublime description of Christian married couples.

Here is a spiritual relationship which sanctifies every other aspect of their life together - “you are joint heirs of the grace of life” (RSV). It ensures that the husband understands his wife and is considerate of her. It enhances the wife’s submission and makes it beautiful. Mutual recognition of this relationship enables husband and wife to share in the intimacies of the spiritual life. They pray together. They grow in grace together.

A proper recognition of their spiritual relationship will touch the passing days with the radiance of eternity. As they look forward to “an inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade,” they will walk with royal freedom among the things of earth. The joy of their “togetherness” will be enriched as they walk with the Lord. His presence will sanctify their pleasure, as well as provide wisdom and strength for their trials.

Often they will wonder:

Why has Thou cast our lot
In the same age and place,
And why together brought
To see each other’s face
To join with loving sympathy
And mix our friendly souls in Thee?
