Daily Encouragement

DAY 196 OF 366

It is surely significant that the Lord links together the knowledge of Scripture and the power of God.

It was significant for the Sadducees. He accused them of being ignorant of both. This small but wealthy group knew quite a bit about the power of man, since they had influence in the high priesthood and in the membership of the Sanhedrin. They dabbled in worldly politics as well. They thought they knew the Scriptures. They believed in the Pentateuch, but they denied the resurrection, together with angels and spirits. They had never before done the kind of Bible study which the Lord conducted that day! The God of resurrection looked out at them from the sacred page, and they must have sensed the shattering of their cherished beliefs.

It is significant for us. The combination of the knowledge of Scripture and the power of God has been characteristic of apostle, preacher and mature believer all down the centuries. We may repudiate the Sadducees’ skepticism, and yet still fall short in this knowledge and power. We need the Lord, by his Spirit, to open the Scriptures to us, so that our hearts may burn within us (Luke 24:32).
