“At that moment” the Saviour’s work was completed. The tearing of the curtain coincided with the loud cry of victory, “It is finished” (John 19:30). The cry declared Calvary’s triumph - “God and sinners reconciled.” “For Christ died for sinners once . . . to bring you to God” (1 Pet. 3:18). That the work was wholly divine is demonstrated by the tearing “from top to bottom,” the work of no human hand. That the work was costly is shown by the likening of “his body” to the torn curtain - “His body, broken in our stead . . . ”
“At that moment,” the old covenant was consummated. There was a certain majesty about its earthly sanctuary, its priesthood and its sacrificial system. It looked forward to the coming of the Priest and the perfect sacrifice, never more poignantly than on the Day of Atonement, when the high priest entered the Most Holy Place. But still the curtain remained - until “that moment.”
“At that moment” “a new and living way” to God was created. “Brothers, since we have confidence to enter the Most Holy Place by the blood of Jesus, by a new and living way opened for us through the curtain, that is his body, and since we have a great high priest over the house of God, let us draw near to God, with a sincere heart in full assurance of faith . . . ” (Heb. 10:19-22).
