Daily Encouragement

DAY 199 OF 366

That hour was unique in that it was the time of the Saviour’s agony in Gethsemane. Jesus told his disciples, “Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation” (Matt. 26:41).

Here is encouragement to pray. Prayer is not just a duty to be performed; it is to watch with him. It is fellowship with our great High Priest himself, and all it’s asking is “in his Name.” It is praying in his Spirit, and “the spirit helps us in our weakness” (Rom. 8:26).

Here is encouragement to overcome the flesh so that we may pray. The Lord knows us: “The spirit is willing, but the body is weak” (Matt. 26:41). There is a need for discipline - the body must be taken in hand, sleep must be regulated (an alarm clock can be an aid to spiritual life!), time must be organized.

The secret of many a spiritual giant is found here. “Kept my morning watch and saw something more of His beauty” - a typical entry in the journal of Spencer Walton, First Director of Africa Evangelical Fellowship.
