Daily Encouragement

DAY 114 OF 366

This is possibly the best known line from Job, familiar to many through Handel’s Messiah rather than from reading the book. It is one of several immortal statements which emerge from the darkness of Job’s agony and shine with eternal light. The very fact that such a statement can come out of such an experience is itself proof positive that God has a beneficent purpose in all the suffering which he permits his servants to endure.

To know that my redeemer lives is to be assured of all that ultimately matters:

It is to be assured of the end: “I know that my Redeemer lives and that in the end he will stand upon the earth” (verse 25).

It is to be assured of the Resurrection: “I know that my Redeemer lives . . . and after my skin has been destroyed, yet in my flesh I will see God” (verse 26).

It is to be assured of the vision of God: “I know that my Redeemer lives . . . I myself will see him with my own eyes - I, and not another” (verse 27).

If this assurance was Job’s, as he endured his trial of faith with the benefit of only a partial revelation of the Redeemer, how much more should it be ours!
