This is surely a word from God to the believing soul - it is not, as some have suggested, the Psalmist’s offer of a counselling service! It must rank as one of God’s most precious promises of guidance.
The character of a guide is of supreme importance in any serious undertaking. Who would attempt the Himalayas with an unreliable guide? For life there is only one infallible guide - the Lord whose “unfailing love surrounds the man who trusts in him” (verse 10).
The guidance which God gives has an air of mystery about it. It does not have the cold, electronic precision of some super-computer. Rather, it is warm with the love of a personal relationship - “I will instruct you . . . ” It is a process of teaching rather than the revelation of a clear-cut plan. Its methods are various. Visions, voices and visitations by angels are not the most common. The Holy Spirit and the word of God are the more usual. Closely associated are the advice of the godly, the exercise of intelligent thought and the providential arrangement of circumstances.
The guided must trust in the Guide. His guidance is geared to the individual, and it is designed for men and women of faith.
