Overcoming: Devotions from Time of Grace

DAY 31 OF 35

Money and Pressure

We all groan at the grotesque salaries that professional athletes and corporate heads pull down. We all know excess when we see it in others, in bloated signing bonuses and cushy stock options. But how about in your own life? How much money is enough? Let's be honest. Our usual answer is "Just a little more--then I'll be okay."

You know the reality in our culture--America worships wealth. “If you've got it, flaunt it." But here's a quiet word from the Word: "Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs" (1 Timothy 6:10).

Do you think of your life and feel needy and deprived? How much pressure do you feel from neighbors and friends and relatives to show off your success (or hide your lack of success)? Does money make you somebody? But let's get real for a minute. Think of how consistently the Lord has provided for you. How many days in your life have you gone without food? How many without clothes? How many have you gone without a person who loves you? Could it be that God is providing everything you really need?
