God Is Just
“Why?” In times of trouble we wish God would give us an answer to that question. He rarely does, leaving us to ask why life is unfair, bad things happen to good people, and evil even exists.
Why does He let faithful obedience go unrewarded, or a lifelong dream fizzle before it is realized, or a loved one die in the prime of life? If God is both sovereign and good, why does the world look the way it does?
It looks the way it does because we have a very limited perspective. We see lots of injustice, true, but our picture is finite. We cannot grasp the grand scheme of things—God’s great plans and purposes that extend well beyond our view.
“Righteousness and justice are the foundation of your throne; love and faithfulness go before you” (Psalm 89:4).
Remember, the Bible teaches that the real God is infinitely good, sovereign, holy—and just.
God has proven that He is a righteous judge, and a merciful one. He placed our just punishment for our sins on His own Son, Jesus, so that justice would not fall on us yet still be served.
Take comfort that no matter how things look right now, God has proven—and will continue to prove—that He is the righteous “Judge of all the earth” (Genesis 18:25). In the end, He will make things right.
In the meanwhile, as we are being conformed to His image, we must confront injustices in the world, refuse vengeance, resist bitterness and resentment, warn others of the ultimate judgment that is coming, and point everyone to God’s mercies. Our just God always knows the score and is watching over us.
