Journey Of The Seed - Catch The Bible's Big Picture In 60 Days

DAY 52 OF 60

ACTS & THE EPISTLES

[Scheduled Reading: Acts 15-21]

The book of Acts simply reports the “acts of the apostles.”

It’s labeled as one of the Bible’s “history” books, covering the launch of the early church.

Many of Paul’s missionary journeys are reported in Acts. As he traveled to cities and visited churches, he wrote letters.

Many of these letters (or epistles) are included throughout the New Testament.

For example, Paul visited

-  Thessalonica (Ch. 17) – see books of Thessalonians

-  Corinth (Ch. 18) – see books of Corinthians

-  Ephesus (Ch. 18 & 19) – see book of Ephesians

-  Rome (Ch. 27 & 28) – see book of Romans

It is believed that Paul wrote at least 8 epistles and as many as 13 letters could be attributed to him.

To keep us focused on the Big Picture narrative of the Bible, I’ve excluded these letters from our 60-day journey.

Each of these epistles accomplishes similar goals. The chief goal is to share the mystery of The Seed - the life, sacrifice and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

In the first few verses of each epistle, Paul identifies himself as a “servant” or an “apostle” of Jesus Christ.

In your future Bible readings of these epistles (separate from this 60-day plan), notice Paul’s many mentions of the name and person of Jesus Christ.

The Second Resurrection

One of Paul’s teaching themes is the resurrection of the dead. This second resurrection (the first is that of Jesus Christ) is crucial to the Bible’s Big Picture.

It’s the reason that we have hope. Just as Christ was raised to life, those of us in Christ Jesus will one day experience a bodily resurrection and eternal life with God in heaven.

Here are some mentions of this resurrection: Daniel 12:2; Mark 12:24-27; John 5:28-29; Acts 24:15; 26:8; 1 Corinthians 15:12, 52; 1 Thessalonians 4:16; Revelation 20:12-13.
