Day 52
PRAY FOR THESE TWO THINGS
[Scheduled Reading: John 6-17]
Today’s read concludes with a powerful example for a praying parent.
Jesus is hours away from heading to the cross. His betrayal and arrest is imminent. The 4,000 year Seed-journey is about to be completed.
Jesus offers a final prayer for his disciples. Think about what this prayer means: his last moments of quiet and solitude before chaos would erupt in Jesus’ life.
You could say the future of his ministry rests heavily on these final prayers for his spiritual offspring. He does not pray for safety from physical harm. He does not pray for protection from persecution or even from death.
What does Jesus pray for?
Two requests (see John 17:15, 17).
Protection from the evil one (v15) - Just as the demons recognized Jesus, He was keenly aware of their existence. Jesus respected the threat the evil one posed to the disciples and He wanted “soul protection” for His followers.
That God would sanctify them in the truth (v17) - Next to protection from evil, Jesus knew that more than anything else, the disciples needed to remain rooted in truth. Your word is truth, Jesus acknowledges before God.
These two powerful things. Protection from evil. Sanctification in the truth. That’s my prayer for my children.
