LISTENING TO THE SAVIOUR
There is an open call to all, to worship. We find it easy to worship the Lord, to sacrifice, to listen, but all on our terms.
Listening involves commitment, trust and obedience. A commitment not just to listen, but to listen with a heart of obedience. How often we have said: Lord, speak, but when He speaks, we are unwilling to listen and obey.
What is it that hinders our listening?
- It could be a busy day where we are caught up with work, with family, with too many things around us. We do not want to take time off to listen to what the Lord has to tell us.
- It could be the fear of Him asking us to do something that is against our liking or something difficult
- It could be something that we have failed in the past that we are called to do again. We fear repeated failure and therefore, refuse to do it.
The secret to live securely and safely is to trust, pray and listen with a willing heart.
When the centurion ran to tell Jesus that his servant was not well, the Lord said: Go your way. The centurion trusted and believed.
Listening is not just an affirmation that we have heard but an intention to obey. Then, we will experience that joy of being secure in the Lord and being safe. Let us listen while there is still time, for there will come a time when we have a desire to listen but we will not be able to. (Proverbs 1:28-29)
At the wedding at Cana, when they ran out of wine, the Lord told them to fill the jar and they filled it to the brim, whereas they could have taken it lightly or given excuses. When Jesus told the ten lepers to go and show themselves to the priest, they could have murmured. It was in the path of obedience, that they were healed.
The Lord only does what is good for us. Therefore, let us take time off to just listen to His voice, to trust Him and obey Him. Are we willing to do whatever He tells us to do? There is no incomplete obedience. Listening plus obedience plus trust is security.
The Lord is not asking us to obey based on the majority opinion, but because He is in total control of our lives and knows exactly what He wants to do with it. What He asks of us may not be comfortable or convenient, but we need to learn to listen and obey.
Let us move forward and make a commitment saying: Lord, I will listen, no matter how difficult or tough it is going to be, I will trust you totally and I will obey you. Enable me to enjoy that safety and security.
Like Samuel, let us have a listening ear, an obedient will and a trusting heart. Let us move forward to do what God wants us to do.
Let us be people who listen to the voice of God.
