90 Days to Wholeness: A Porn Addiction Recovery Devotional for Womenናሙና
(contribution written by Jennifer Miller)
When I first began my recovery journey, I knew I needed to be accountable, but I had no idea how to go about finding a good accountability partner. So I asked a friend of mine who happened to be present the day I shared my struggle for the first time. She said sure, and I never heard a word from her again.
Being new in my recovery, this wasn't good. She got my accountability report via email of my Internet browsing activity, but never asked me about it. She never checked in with me, and being the typical addict that I was, I didn't check in with her either. To this day, almost six years later, I have yet to hear from her. I think of this as the accountability crash and burn.
Because I had no idea what defined a good accountability partner, or what I should expect from her and vice versa, there were no guidelines in place for our accountability relationship. It was set up for failure from the beginning. Am I still friends with her? Of course. But I should have taken a closer look at what I expected from her and communicated those to her.
I really love the Scripture above because it says in an abundance of counselors (or I like to use the word guides), there is safety.
Have you tried to establish accountability partners in the past and failed? What were your expectations of what an accountability partner should be, or did you not have any expectations at all?
