90 Days to Wholeness: A Porn Addiction Recovery Devotional for Women

DAY 48 OF 90

So far we have discussed the need for accountability and what makes up an appropriate accountability partner. Today, we’re going to look at what it looks like to be a partner to someone else. Like it’s been said, it is best that your accountability partner(s) be someone who has been or currently is an addict. This evens out the playing field because one partner shouldn’t have lordship over the other. An accountable relationship is not about calling people out if or when she slips up. It’s about spurring each other on toward love and good deeds (Hebrews 10:24). You’re a team.

Every accountability partnership is different.

Here are a few rules of thumb that can be applied to everyone:

  1. Check in with them. Not just every once in a while, but at least once a week. More often than that is even better. A suggestion may be to touch base after you receive their weekly accountability report (even if it’s clean).
  2. Ask tough questions. It’s not enough to just ask, “did you view porn this week?” Ask questions of the heart such as “how have you been triggered or tempted this week?”
  3. Texting and emails aren’t enough either. Make time to video chat or give them a call. It is much easier to omit details over email and text messages. Hearing the person’s voice and demeanor can make a big difference.
